Agree to Third Party Inspection

When learning how to sell a car in Hawaii, the first thing you should do is agree to let them have the vehicle inspected by a third party. The seller and buyer have to agree on when and where to conduct the inspection, and the buyer is ultimately responsible to pay for the inspection. If no issues are reported with the vehicle, the seller should keep these records for future reference.

Gather Documentation

Prior to placing the vehicle up for sale, it’s important to get all the proper documentation together. These include maintenance records and a vehicle history report, so the buyer knows the vehicle is maintained. The title for the vehicle is the most important piece of information to have handy, as if there is any type of lien on the vehicle, the seller must either pay off the lien, or be granted a lien release from the lienholder. Having these types of documents at the ready is the best way to sell a car in Hawaii.

Bill of Sale

Although a bill of sale is not required for most individuals selling a car in Hawaii. However, if the title is not in your name, you must have a notarized bill of sale. If your name is on the title, you can always skip over this step, but it’s always recommended that there is documentation that ownership has switched to the buyer.

Title Transfer

The next step in learning how to sell a car in Hawaii near Ewa Beach is to transfer the title to the new owner. When the title is changing hands, both the buyer and seller must fill out the sections on the document, such as name, address, and buyer and seller signature. If the title is filled out correctly, it will be easier for the buyer to register the vehicle in their name. Under the odometer disclosure requirements, you must also state the accurate reading on the odometer at the time of sale.

Notice of Transfer

Next, you would need to file a notice of transfer, which needs to be properly filled out and sent over to the DMV. This is a simple document that just needs the name and address of both the buyer and seller. You then have to send the document to the address given within 10 days. Failure to do so could result in a $100 fine.

Remove Plates and Insurance

Once you’ve completed the steps above, the last step when selling a car in Hawaii is to remove the plates before handing over the keys to the new owner. This is critical, as you don’t want to be held responsible for any violations incurred by the new owner. You should also cancel your insurance of the vehicle as soon as possible.
