How to Check Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid Change

Your vehicle’s transmission has the crucial role of ensuring that the appropriate amount of power is sent from the engine to the wheels, allowing you to achieve and maintain different speeds with ease. Transmission fluid lubricates the internal components of this system, helping the gears to shift effortlessly and delivering a smooth ride on the roads of Waianae, Ewa Beach, and beyond. If you’re wondering how to check the transmission fluid and keep your new or used vehicle operating at peak performance, you’ve come to the right place. Below, the Honolulu GMC service team breaks down the steps of this important aspect of transmission maintenance.

How to Check Transmission Fluid Step by Step

Before you check your transmission fluid, start your car and let it warm up for a few minutes. Then, after making sure the car is in park, pop the hood and follow these steps:

  1. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. You’ll typically find it to the right of the oil dipstick on front-wheel drive vehicles. If you can’t find it, consult your owner’s manual.
  2. Take out the dipstick and inspect the fluid on it. The fluid should be almost clear with a pinkish tinge to it. If it’s dirty or smells burnt, bring your vehicle in for professional transmission service.
  3. Wipe off the dipstick with a rag before reinserting it into its tube. Then, remove it again and check the fluid level. If it falls below the “full” mark, more fluid should be added.
  4. Add more fluid as needed using a funnel, and be careful so you don’t overfill the fluid reservoir.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

Now that you know how to check transmission fluid, you may be asking, “How often do you check your transmission fluid?” In general, it should checked every month. If you’re in doubt, your owner’s manual will give you the automaker’s recommended timetable. When checking transmission fluid, it’s also a good idea to check other fluids, like oil, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid.

Transmission Maintenance Considerations

Checking and changing the fluid are integral parts of good transmission maintenance. But to get the longest, most dependable life out of your transmission, there are a few points to keep in mind:

  • Use the type of fluid recommended in your owner’s manual. Different types of transmissions use different types of fluid.
  • If you have a manual transmission, you will likely have to raise your vehicle on a jack to get to the plug under the vehicle. This can be labor-intensive and risky, so many vehicle owners leave the job to professionals.
  • Low transmission fluid can cause gear hesitation when shifting, but that’s only one potential cause. If the gears still hesitate after checking the fluid, your transmission service is a priority, as a more serious problem could be at the root of the problem.
  • Aim to replace transmission fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles. The exact amount varies based on your transmission type, driving habits, and other factors. Again, your owner’s manual will give you the best advice.
